Step away from the computer,

My pony is jet black with no white on him what-so-ever. Black pony's gear is also black - black saddle, black bridle, black full numnah, black girth..... is that too much black?!

He is a hunter type and will be presented as such if/when I go in these classes (need to grow a pair first Embarassed

) but will also be going in open for me to gain more experience.

In open I will add a cream numnah, have the fancy browband (red, white, blue) and might even chuck on a white girth for good measure (but that would involve buying one, so scrap that).

In hunter it will be black saddle, black numnah etc etc no fancy browband and just alllllll black. Is that just too much black? I really feel it is.

What are peoples opinions and tastes with regards to black vs brown gear on a black horse, especially one who is a hunter type? Would you try brown just to break up the colour a little (dark havanna saddle, bridle, girth and brown numnah)?

no, not to much black i dont think, just make sure your jacket isn't too dark.

If you can't tell sh!t from clay, don't take up sculpting.

Well... people have always argued that black in the show ring is too harsh on the chestnut, I agree. The idea is to keep it subtle and then bling up browband and stock (only in open NOT hunter). So black gear is perfect on black horses IMO.

Was also discussing this with a showy friend and I did a bit of a paint job on a show pic I had and blacked out the browband (it was a ribbon). Then I put a picture of him with a dark havanna saddle on, next to the other picture and the brown honestly looked very out of place.

It still looked very dark but with proper hunter attire on I think he will look quite smart.

Kind of answered my own question, but I do appreciate the responses and opinions...and totally agree Very Happy

Sorry to hijack your thread but i was wondering the exact same thing . Except my new boy is a open type , with star/stripe/snip and two back socks .
I have a gorgeoius old stubben which is a nice dark brown . And a Jessica which is black .
I would be doing open and PC on him .

My kids have an all black pony and anything else but black looks odd on him. The brown just seems to clash as silly as that might sound, havanna and chocolate. So all black is actually quite simple and elegant looking in his case. If you want to add colour for the open ring i would just match up your browband, jacket, helmet etc as you mentioned to give some contrast and hopefully catch the judges eye, goodluck Very Happy

black tack - yes! brown would look awful!
hunter - so you need a black girth, I'd consider white for open..
however I would look at a cream numnah (to match joddies) but make sure its only small, not sticking out miles with heaps of 'fluff'

here is my friend, just convinced her to change, his a liver so bit difference but I think it just helps the over-all picture - but yes he is an open too...
everything is the same - her outfit, horse etc. other than a cream numnah/white girth

just my 2 cents worth... but I would keep everything black and go for a small cream numnah to match your jods - a black jackets/ helmet/ gloves and a nice cream/gold stock would look ace Very Happy

For open I have a cream half numnah, red, white and blue browband and will be sticking with the black girth because I don't want to buy another. My attire will be either banana or cream breeches, red stripe jacket or blue with either red or blue vest (depending on which shirt I wear) and red polka dot tie. Black bridle and saddle.

For hunter I will have a black full numnah (suits him a lot better), black plain flat bridle (same as open minus the browband) and then will introduce a bit of colour with my outfit - cream breeches, shirt will either be lemon or white with either a stock or tie but colour undecided (won't be anything to vibrant though) and tweed (light olive) jacket.

I definitely won't wear black on him, I'll look like I'm in mourning Laughing

there will be so much of it.
