Anyone read 50 Shades of Grey, 50 Shades darker and 50 shades freed???
If you are willing to admit to reading them - what were your thoughts on Mr Grey and his twitchy palms???
And of fact that it is banned in Californian State Libraries, and some in Florida????

Nah, haven't seen it
Read the sample last night, it ended after she sold him stuff in the hardware store. Knowing what i do about the book the things he bought made me giggle.
The prose is annoying- kinda whiny, something i can't put my finger on. If I'd picked it at random as a sample i wouldn't bother reading it, but its kinda got me intrigued

What I bet you can put your finger on is that it started off as a Twilight Fanfic So this is Edward and his kinky side

Actually it did seem kinda twilighty, but because i love stephanie myers 'the host' i didn't go there

I just finished it. Slightly disturbed I downloaded it off my fathers kindle app but okay Lol Dirty old bastard!
Anyway I kind of enjoyed it, some eye rolling and skip reading involved, the sex scene on every second page got kind of boring after a while. Surprised i enjoyed it as much as i did, found I'd become quite invested in the characters at the end.
Imagine my shock when it ended how it did and I didn't realize it was a trilogy!
Looking forward to book two

Coco - The writing never 'grabbed' me either, and this seems to be a common view on the writing, but everyone seems to like the characters and the story line itself...
The group of ladies that recommended it to me, had to convince me to keep reading actually, but by midway thru the second book, I had to keep reading, just to find out how they progressed...
For those who haven't finished, there is a 'Fifty Shades' point of view at the end of book 3..
ETA - someone stole Christians car yesterday too:

This does improve quite dramatically in books 2 and 3.
The whole context of the story changes in book 2 and trust me, you will develop a soft spot for Christian as a character as he evolves - I don't want to say too much for those who haven't read 2 and 3.
I bought 50 Shades of Grey last Friday, read and finished that day. I bought 50 Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed on Saturday - one done Saturday and 1 done Sunday. Do I really want to admit this???
I'm an avid reader, so that is my defense and I'm sticking with it!!
I did enjoy the series, though in my honest opinion (and feel free to totally disagree with me) the ending of 50 Shades Freed is a little rushed.
I will tell you, I'm NOT a reader of this sort of book normally - I read Patricia Cornwell, James Patterson, etc. I read these because I had to see what the hysteria was about - and I must say, I was quite impressed

I bought it and still can't get through more than a chapter at a time (without switching to read something else)... Not a fan of erotica, that's all
As a funny aside, since trying to read it I've read:
Scriber
Growing up Amish
John carter from mars (princess of mars)
Biography of a woman in the upper ranks of scientology (cant remember the name, scary ****!!!)
Deadlocked (latest true blood book!)

I just can't get past the Ana character's use of 'subconscious' for her inner prude voice... FFS she's supposed to be right into literature yet is portrayed as a moron... I suffered through the first book, but won't read the other two, too much sex not enough storyline for me
Oh, and clingy men freak me out, can't stand christian OR Edward

Thanks heaps BV.
Wow you've read a lot of books
I'm not sure if I could get into all the withcy stuff so I browsed some other posts on here and have decided to go with Jily Coopers - Riders.
At first I thought, this isn't going to get me into reading, but the more I read, the better I liked it.
Certainly not as good (in my opinion) as the hunky Mr Gray but I am really enjoying it.

Most of them I have on my bookshelf - so if you want, just yell out, I'll lend you them... They nearly all have a 'magick' element, but it doesn't over power the story at all...

I've read the series.
I found it painful to read.
Just so badly written.
So much Murmuring, Muttering and Mumbling. No one ever spoke. The crazy sex was boring after a while and biting lips, eye rolling and "oh my" got boring. Buzz words and descriptions began to infuriate me.
Heaps of product placement.... the subconcious and inner godess... jesus.. it was really really painful. It reads like no one has proof read it and taken out all the excess non required words.
It became obvious that there was only a very weak plot which was driven by "How kinky" the sex scenes could become and when it finally did get interesting in the last book, they did not draw out the suspense and keep the reader on edge.
While I understand it's erotic fiction, it sends a really troubling message to the vulnerable or inexperienced.... that voilent control freak men are "hot"... if they have money that is.
The characters seem to fight at least 3 times a day. He uses sex as a tool to avoid mature discussion of issues that cloud the relationship. It seems a very unhealthy building block to start a good relationship on.
It leaves me scratching my head that such dribble can sell so many books and also makes me wonder about audience as well.
The things I did like about it? The email exchanges. They were funny and witty and reminded me of Bridget Jone's Diary.

What's the draw card to such a story? It's a classic romance with a twist - normal girl meets boy with money and happily ever after.
God, it is by no means a work of literary genius, but it is an easy read.
To be honest, I found it a lot like Twilight - no real literary genius but a good, honest, easy read that allows you to escape reality for a bit without having to concentrate.
I liken it to watching certain movies - I'm a disney movie fan, not for any particular reason other than you don't have to really concentrate to understand them.
I believe it is the whole lack of a good wholesome plot that makes the story are what they are.
Some of it was over written (or under written, depends on your point of view) and certain information was provided more than once and yes, that got annoying.
Product placement is really neither here nor there. I mean jesus christ, I've read plenty of books where the characters have iPods and Blackberry phones and some have iPads too. The branding of the cars went with his over bearing need to be protective, same as the branding of his helicopter. I mean if he was that over protective and driving around in a camaro you'd have a bit of a problem with him as a character I would think.
Everyone has an issue with the sub-conscious and the inner goddess whereas I just think they added to the amusement side of it for me.
Besides, it doesn't really matter. Good on the author for giving it a go and getting her writing out there - I'm sure she's made some great money for herself, especially considering they are talking movies now too.
If you choke a smurf, what colour does it turn?
