The last two times I have fallen I have slightly sprained the same ankle and bruised the top of my foot.

I am using normal stirrup irons, grips and riding boots. I did injure this ankle badly years ago and no longer have the same flexion in it, maybe thats why it is getting stuck. My foot does free from the stirrup before I hit the deck so I am not being dragged but it does worry me.

Are there any stirrups available to help with this? Im pretty happy not to fall off again, that would be ideal, but in reality....

Troppo. Loco. Round the twist.
I played high level netball for years and years.
I have dodgy knees and ankles.
When I bought my new saddle, they recommended these stirrup irons,
and I absolutely LOVE them.
Your stirrups hang straight down (they dont twist).
These might help your situation also.

They are off set stirrups irons.
I think mine are sprenger (sp ?).

They are open sided and do take a bit of getting used to. You MUST keep weight in your feet when riding but I don't see that as a bad habit to get into. I can't think of the brand name but they are certainly the safest stirrups I've ever ridden in. Smile

Sprenger System 4 as per dooz post above. Daughter has severe ankle problem and these did wonders. Not cheap but worth every cent she says

I've done some jumping in them, nothing massive, just smallies but felt OK with them. I've also sat some rather committed bucking and even a rear without issue. I credit them with improving my legs and stickablity no end but some people do hate them with a passion so it's horses for courses I suppose Smile

I had a pair and I have to admit I didn't love them, so I sold them. However it's pretty much impossible to get hung up in them so I think from that perspective they would really suit the OP.

The open sided ones are "safestyle". I had some, but found them too open. I liked the fitting at the top though, so there's no twist in your leather.

I've been riding in EE widetread irons for a month now & really like them. I have weak ankles too, they are supportive & encourage the correct foot position, yet take the strain off the ankle. A bit odd looking, but they work!

Does anyone know if the Safestyle stirrups are comp legal?

They do look very safe but I dont know how I would go with them. I could always try and onsell if they don't work out.

Any others out there people know of?

Mdc Ultimate Stirrups. I use them and love them. Google for a bit more info.

I have a 5" pair that are in excellent condition and will be selling as soon as the smaller size arrive. The 5" is just a little too wide as I have quite a narrow foot.

I'll put them up next week when the new ones arrive.

Thanks for your replies. I will look into those irons Martina and I might give them a try first.
Hopefully it is a long time before I fall off and know if they are working!

No worries .... I am going to get a pair of the "Sicher Steigbuegel" for myself. Not planning to fall off Razz but I just like the look of them and with that open curve it would prevent getting stuck.

I use Sprenger stirrups for jumping because I have a dodgy knee, and MDC's for dressage which rotate. Not cheap but well worth the $$. Smile
